With Mimecast, your organization can have a fully-integrated suite of email protection services, including spam filtering, email continuity, and archiving. Alternately, you can choose to have just filtering or just filtering and email continuity. Either way, Mimecast has the unique advantage of being seamlessly integrated with the Microsoft Outlook email client. Users can report spam, manage allow/block lists, search the message archive, etc. directly from Outlook.

How Does Mimecast Work?

Mimecast is hosted in a highly redundant cloud system with a service level agreement of 100% uptime. The Secure Email Gateways use multiple layers of analysis to detect threats. Zero-hour threat definitions are updated every few minutes to protect against the latest malicious patterns and viruses. Suspicious connections are dropped and all incoming emails are scanned, including message headers, content, and attachments. In addition to the system-wide filtering definitions, domain administrators can create policy-based filters that are applied in real time, and each user has their own allow/block list.

Mimecast Email Continuity provides failover email service in the event of primary mail server downtime. Email continuity users may not even be aware of server downtime, since messages are seamlessly pulled in from the Mimecast system. In addition to new emails, calendar events and a message history of up to 58 days are available through Outlook, the online portal, or the Mimecast mobile app. When the Exchange server comes back online, messages sent and received during downtime are synced. Mimecast services are also available for non-Exchange servers by using a POP connection.

Mimecast Archiving provides fully compliant email storage with a retention time of up to 99 years with no space restriction. The email archive can be searched from Outlook, the online portal, or the Mimecast mobile app. At least three copies of each message are kept in geographically disparate locations, ensuring that messages are never lost. Server architecture is carefully engineered to ensure that archive searches return results in near real time. In addition, the historical email import option ensures that you can have your organization's full email archive all in one highly reliable system.

How Do I Get Started?

Setting up Mimecast is a simple process. Two MX records will be provided to replace the hostname(s) for your mail server(s). Thus using the Mimecast service provides additional protection to your mail server(s) by eliminating the need for those hostname(s) to be publicly visible. Webservio engineering will provide instructions for a few other changes to make in your DNS and Exchange server, such as IP ranges to allow, updating Send Connectors and Journal Connectors as needed.

When set-up is complete, users can be given instructions to access the system. Mimecast configuration tools simplify deployment for large numbers of workstations.
